Pregnancy and Infant Loss: Helping Clients Heal Through Grief

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

Pregnancy and infant loss remain among the most devastating—and often invisible—forms of grief. These losses are frequently minimized or misunderstood by society, leaving bereaved individuals feeling isolated, invalidated, and unsupported. Mental health professionals play a critical role in helping clients navigate the profound emotional, physical, and relational impacts of perinatal loss. This training will prepare clinicians to work compassionately and competently with clients grieving a miscarriage, stillbirth, termination for medical reasons, neonatal death, or infant loss. Participants will explore the unique nature of perinatal grief, including how it intersects with identity, trauma, cultural beliefs, and reproductive experiences. Practical tools and therapeutic approaches will be offered to support clients through their grief, honor their losses, and facilitate healing in a deeply personal and often stigmatized area of bereavement.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize the psychological, emotional, and somatic responses commonly experienced by individuals following pregnancy and infant loss.
  • Differentiate between various types of perinatal loss (e.g., miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death) and articulate the unique clinical considerations for each.
  • Identify risk factors for prolonged or complicated grief among survivors of pregnancy/infant loss.
  • Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches to the assessment and treatment of grief related to pregnancy and infant loss.
  • Implement strategies to help clients validate, honor, and integrate their loss, including the use of ritual, memorialization, and meaning-making practices.
